My Autobiography

Rick was true to his word. Liverpool chased Xabi Alonso, who I knew was a decent player. Real Madrid were also pursing Real Sociedad's playmaking midfielder, but he wanted to work with Benitez. Within twenty minutes of Xabi's first training session at Melwood, I thought tomyself, 'Top signing, Pure class. Touch, vision, the creative works.' I look forward to playing alongside him.

My Autobiography, 16 The Long and Winding Road to Istanbul, 299

…… Come on! Now or never. Liverpool's strongest character came to the fore. Xabi slid into tackles, keeping the ball in play.

My Autobiography, 16 The Long and Winding Road to Istanbul, 308

That first leg was cagey, but we felt the happier with a 0-0 draw. The only disappointment came when the referee, Alain Sars, booked Xabi for a challenge on Eidur Gudjohnsen, which ruled Xabi out of the Anfield return. What really angered us was that Gudjohnsen clearly conned Sars. He dived. No question about it.

'I never touch him,' Xabi said in the dressing-room afterwards.

'Don't worry, Xabi,' I replied. 'We'll get through. We'll beat Chelsea. We'll sort Gudjohnsen out for you. Join us in the final.'

But Xabi was inconsolable, close to tears. He loves playing and felt bitter resentment towards Gudjohnsen. We all did. Xabi is a huge player for Liverpool, and a really popular guy, and a big matchlike Chelsea at home was made for a midfielder of Xabi's class. We read all the allegations in the papers that Gudjohnsen told Xabi he knew he was on a booking. True or not, that fired us up more. Chelsea were going to fucking wellget it at Anfield.

……

'Chelsea's players think they are in the final,' he told us. 'Chelsea think they have beaten you. Now go and show them how wrong they are. And remember Xabi.'

My Autobiography, 16 The Long and Winding Road to Istanbul, 315, 316

My mind raced. Who did Rafa tell to take any pens? Think, think. It wasn't me, I knew that. Luis tried to get the ball off Carra. Carra remembered Benitez picks a penalty-taker for each game; if that penalty-taker misses, Rafa takes the blame. That's clever management. Xabi was the pointed one. Cool as you like, Xabi took control, collected the ball from Carra and placed it o the spot. Talk about pressure. 'Put that ball in the net, please, Xabi,' I prayed. Xabi hit it hard and low. I started leaping into the air to celebrate. Shit! Dida saved it. Well, that's us fucked. Yet the ball was loose. Xabi reacted quickest. Always the top pro, the Spaniard followed up,and his finish was exquisite. He smashed it in, left foot. Get in! Take that, Dida! Take that, Milan! Where's the smirk now?

God, I was relieved for Xabi. If Liverpool had returned home having lost 3-2 and having missed a penalty, that could have been a massive turning point in Xabi's life. How would Liverpool's fans have reacted? As a character, Xabi is strong, and he could have got over it, but I'm glad a good man and a great player didn't need to find out. I wouldn't want a missed penalty in a European Cup final on my CV.

Relief, joy, every emotion was there as we chased after Xabi. It was a piley-on, Xabi disappearing under shouting, laughing, uncontrollable team-mates.

My Autobiography, 17 The Miracle, 338

…… But I felt desperately nervous because pens awaited. Rafa marched across and look at us, establishing who was confident enough to take one. 'No,'said Djimi. 'Yeah,' said Carra, typically. Carra always fancies himself at pens. Rafa also got a yes from Didi, Xabi, me, Vadi, Djibril, Riise and Garcia.

My Autobiography, 17 The Miracle, 341

Didi strolled back, towards his footballing family, to a row of smiling faces: Carra, Sami, Djimi, Garcia, me, Riise, Xabi and Vladi. All in it together.

My Autobiography, 17 The Miracle, 343

When Jerzy made that save off Shevchenko, the sprint was on to reach our amazing keeper. Carra was supposed to have cramp, but it didn't look like it!He was first out of the blocks, followed by Finnan, Luis, Riise, Xabi, Didi, then me and the rest.

My Autobiography, 17 The Miracle, 345

I carried on kissing. Xabi got a smacker full on the lips.

My Autobiography, 17 The Miracle, 349

Where the hell I am? My eyes struggled to deal with the daylight streaming in through the window. Gradually, the outline of something large came into focus at the end of the bed. Fuck me, it's the European Cup! It was just me and the European Cup. My room-mate, Xabi, had his missus staying over so he had gone off to catch up with her. Me and the European Cup were alone together.

On the bus after the game, Wayne asked me, 'What do you think about the wink, Stevie?'

Simple.'Honestlt, Wazza,' I replied, 'If we were playing Spain, and Xabi Alonso or Luis Garcia winked at the ref for me to get sent of, I would never speak to them again. Never. No fucking way. I just couldn't. I would be that frustrated at one of my own team-mates.'

2012年出版的My Liverpool Story。

Understandably, Rafa turned to the Spanish market he knew well and signed Luis Garcia, Xabi Alonso and Josemi. …… Straight away I could see that Xabi had a touch of class about him. His passing range was great, but he was tough as well. He would have no problems settling into English football.

My Liverpool Story, Chapter 8 2004-2005,Hola, Signor Benitez, 130

Penalty. Xabi Alonso stepped up to take the spot-kick and although Dida saved his effort, he smashed home the rebound into the roof of the net. Amazing.

My Liverpool Story, Chapter 8 2004-2005,That Epic Final, 144

How often have you seen Xabi Alonso in the last few years look like that, just staring in the distance, helpless? It doesn't happen to him, does it?

I wanted to take the spot-kick and for a large part of that season I was our designated penalty taker. But Rafa had a thing where he named a different penalty taker for different games and he would go off his head – shouting and fining players – if someone disobeyed his orders. He named  Xabi Alonso as the penalty taker for the final before the game and while I was personally gutted, I knew Xabi was deadly. OK, Dida saved his first attempt but when he fired the rebound into the roof of the net our comeback was complete. 3-3. Amazing.

My Liverpool Story, Chapter 11 2007-2008, TurningPoint, 152

We were in Spain for a pre-season game against Espanyol in the summer of 2009 when it became clear to me that we were going to struggle. Xabi Alonso had left to join Real Madrid for £30m and the club would not be reinvesting all the money from his departure in the team. The banks needed some of it. At the time, I was thinking there is no player in the world who is going to come in to Liverpool and be as good as Xabi had been, so to then find out that we couldn't use all of the proceeds from his sale was a blow. Alberto Aquilani joined from AS Roma for £18m, but he came with an injury and never really settled. He is a good player, but he's not Xabi.

My Liverpool Story, Chapter 8 2004-2005,Boardroom Politics, 210

I've spoken about the imapact Fernando Torres had on my game, we had Carra at the back, and there was another person who contributed to the success of our partnership and that was Xabi Alonso.

He was a magician misfield. The hub of everything we attempt. Every time Alonso's name comes up in conversation, people will instantly say: 'fantastic passer', and he is. I would have so much time on the ball because invariably Alonso would find me and do it so quickly that the opppsition did not have time to react.

But despite the cleverness and speed of hispassing, that was not the most obvious thing that struck me about him. Actuallyit was his work rate and his toughness. Xabi is a tough, tough boy.

So when you look at the spine of the team we had for a few seasons, you could not help but be impressed. …… there was Alonso, who has proved himself to be one of the best passers year after year after year……

…… If we had been a bit more astute in the transfer market around the time when Alonso was pulling the strings and Torres was scoring for fun, then that team would have won the league.

……

Xabi Alonso had his own problems, which began when Rafa wanted to bring Gareth Barry in and move Xabi on in the summer of 2008. I don't blame Xabi for then getting his agent to see what was out there. It is hard for a Spaniard to turn Real Madrid down, especially when the manager had tried to sell Xabi when he was settled at the club. When some players move they go on about how they are huge Liverpool fans and why leaving is 'killing' them. Xabi was genuinely gutted to go. He loved the club and believe in me when I say he is a true Liverpool fan. Before every big game he has I will text him and wish him good luck. He does the same to me. A great player, but a great lad, too.
